Shaquem Alphonso Griffin used to play a linebacker in American football. He has another twin brother, Shaquill Griffin, a cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who went to college football at UCF. Griffin lost his left hand when he was 4 years old. Griffin later got a lot of media attention as a possible pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.  

He was picked up by the Seahawks on April 28, 2018, as the 141st pick in the fifth round. This brought him back together with Shaquill. But they will force could not stop him. Shaquem Griffin was born on July 20, 1995, in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Terry and Tangie Griffin. He was born after Shaquill by two minutes. Shaquem was born with a condition called amniotic band syndrome, which made his left-hand fingers not fully develop.

 At age 4, he picked up a butcher knife and planned to cut off the hand because it hurt so much. His mom removed the knife aside, and the next day, his parents made plans to cut off his leg. Still, Griffin was able to keep playing sports even without his left hand. He and his brother competed in route, baseball, and football.

Griffin was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, and went to high school at Lakewood, in which he learned defense from the football team. He proceeded to the Under Armour Combine in 2011.

As a senior in 2012, he helped Lakewood get to the semifinals of the Florida 5A regional tournament. He was named to the Second Team of 5A All-State and the Second Team of All-Suncoast by the Tampa Bay Times. He was in the 2012 North-South All-Star Game put on by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association.

 USA Football put him on the 2013 U.S. Under-19 National Team, and a detection he decided to bring him public attention when it made ESPN’s list of the Top 10 Plays. Both Rivals and ESPN gave him three stars as a recruiting prospect.

He also achieved prizes in the 4×100 relay, triple jump, shot put, and discus. His name and achievement were posted in the Tampa Bay Times Track and Field Athlete after he won the state title in the triple jump and broke two Lakewood records (Florida). Colleges like LSU, Miami, and Purdue showed interest to hire him as a track and field athlete. 

College life career

The University of Central Florida gave football scholarships to both Shaquem and his brother Shaquill (UCF). But coach George O’Leary and Shaquill turned down the offers because they were interested in something else. Griffin went to college at UCF and had 17 sacks and 30 tackles for a loss during his time here for a while. Notably, he played games for the team Temple Owls against Austin Peay Governors in 2017.

Shaquem Griffin was a redshirt freshman in his second season. He played as the second sting player and the coach. After seeing the special methods and creativity he used, the team’s leaders chose him to be a co-instructor. Griffin thinks that Scott Frost being hired as head coach for the 2016 and 2017 seasons helped him improve during his redshirt junior and redshirt senior years.

Griffin wrote in The Players’ Tribune that after his third season under O’Leary, in which he didn’t win any games, “Coach Frost brought me back into the light when he came in. He gave me the chance I’d been waiting for since I first came to UCF. And I made the most of it “.

Griffin was named the Most Valuable Player on Defense for the 2018 Peach Bowl. He was also chosen as the best defensive Player of the Year for the 2016 American Athletic Conference. During Griffin’s senior season, UCF went undefeated and won the national title. Griffin told NFL Network and Ralph Warner in November 2017 that he wanted to keep playing football in the NFL.

Professional career

In March of 2018, Griffin took part in the NFL Scouting Combine. He got a lot of attention for doing 20 reps on the bench press while wearing a prosthesis. He also ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds, which was the fastest time for a linebacker since the NFL started keeping official records.

Griffin was invited to the 2018 NFL Draft, even though he wasn’t predicted to be picked in the first round. On March 29, 2018, he said yes. Griffin got a lot of attention in the news and on social media before and during the draft because he would have been the first NFL player with only one hand to be picked.
