Patti Austin was born on August 10, 1948 in Harlem, New York City. Her mother was a jazz singer and her father was a saxophonist. At the age of four, she began singing with gospel groups around New York City and eventually joined Quincy Jones’s band at age 16. She went on to attend the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan before going on to major in music at Syracuse University.

After college, Patti moved back to New York City where she worked as a session singer for artists such as Luther Vandross and Paul Simon before launching her solo career in 1975 with the release of her self-titled debut album. The album spawned two hit singles “Every Home Should Have One” and “Baby Come To Me” which both charted on the R&B charts.

Throughout the late 70s and early 80s, Patti continued to release albums that produced several hits including “Do You Love Me” which reached #1 on the R&B chart and #7 on the pop chart in 1982. She also collaborated with Michael Jackson on his hit single “The Lady In My Life” from his Thriller album which won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group that year.

In 1985, Patti released her most successful album Gettin’ Away With Murder which featured two Top 10 singles “Honey For The Bees” and “The Heat Of Heat” both reaching #6 on the R&B charts respectively. The album peaked at #18 on Billboard 200 Album Chart becoming one of her most successful albums ever released.
