He attended King’s College School and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where he became friends with actor Alan Bates.

Reed began acting professionally at age 20 when he made his debut on stage at the Nottingham Repertory Theatre. His first film appearance was as an uncredited extra in the British feature film Serious Charge (1959).
