Mathison’s first major success came when she wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s classic film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and the film went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of all time. After this success, Mathison continued to write screenplays for a variety of films, including The Black Stallion (1979), The Escape Artist (1982), The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) and Kundun (1997).
In addition to her work as a screenwriter, Mathison also wrote several books for children, including The Escape Artist (1982) and The Indian in the Cupboard (1995). She was also a producer on several films, including Kundun and The Banger Sisters (2002).

Mathison was married twice; first to director Henry Winkler from 1983–1987 and then to actor Harrison Ford from 1983-2004. She had two children with Ford: Malcolm Ford and Georgia Ford.
Mathison was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in March 2015 and passed away on November 4th of that year at the age of 65.
