Melissa Mathison was an American screenwriter, author, and producer. She is best known for writing the screenplay for Steven Spielberg's 1982 classic film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and became one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Mathison wrote several books for children, produced films such as Kundun and The Banger Sisters (2002), and was married twice to director Henry Winkler (1983–1987) and actor Harrison Ford (1983-2004).
