Majel Barrett was an American actress, producer, and director who had a net worth of $10 million at the time of her death in 2008. She was best known for her roles as Nurse Christine Chapel on Star Trek: The Original Series and Lwaxana Troi on Star Trek: The Next Generation. She also wrote and directed two episodes of the series.
Barrett was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932. She attended Shaker Heights High School and then studied theater at the University of Miami. Her first professional job was as an actress for WERE Radio in Cleveland. After that she moved to New York City where she found work on Broadway and off-Broadway before moving to California to pursue television work.
In 1966 she landed the role of Nurse Christine Chapel on Star Trek: The Original Series which ran until 1969. She appeared in 22 episodes with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan and Nichelle Nichols among others. This role would become her most famous one and it led to her becoming a fan favorite character throughout the years despite not appearing in many episodes.
In 1987 she returned to Star Trek as Lwaxana Troi, mother of Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on Star Trek: The Next Generation which ran until 1994. She also appeared in 11 episodes of Deep Space Nine from 1993 to 1999 and six episodes of Voyager from 1995 to 2001 making her the only actor to appear in all five live-action shows set within the universe created by Gene Roddenberry’s original series.
Barrett also wrote two episodes for The Next Generation; “The Bonding” (1989) and “Genesis” (1994). Additionally, she directed two more; “Haven” (1989) and “Thine Own Self” (1993).
