Linda Stein was born on April 18th, 1952 in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish family. She attended Midwood High School before studying art at Pratt Institute. After graduating from college she began working as an art teacher at PS 197 in Brooklyn and then worked as an art director for Sesame Street before moving to Manhattan in 1975 where she became involved with the punk rock scene and began managing bands such as The Dead Boys and The Ramones.
Throughout her career Linda Stein was passionate about both music management and visual arts. She exhibited her artwork around the world, exploring themes of gender roles and identity through installations that combined sculpture, painting, photography, video, performance art, and more. In 2004 she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with The Ramones before retiring from music management in 2006 to focus on her visual arts career full time until her death on October 30th 2007 due to complications from breast cancer at age 55.
