McMurtry began his career as a novelist in 1961 with the publication of Horseman, Pass By, which was later adapted into the movie Hud starring Paul Newman. He followed this up with several other successful novels including The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, and Lonesome Dove. His novel Lonesome Dove won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1986.
