John was born to Barbara and Bud Cowsill in Newport, Rhode Island on June 8th, 1953. His father was a Navy veteran who worked in construction and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up in a musical family, John began playing music at a young age. He learned to play guitar and drums from his older brother Bill and eventually became the band’s lead vocalist.

The family performed around their hometown before being discovered by producer Artie Kornfeld. Kornfeld signed them to MGM Records in 1967 which led to the release of their debut album “The Cowsills” that same year. The album featured hits such as “The Rain, the Park & Other Things” which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 and “We Can Fly” which made it to number nine on the chart in 1968.
