The family performed around their hometown before being discovered by producer Artie Kornfeld. Kornfeld signed them to MGM Records in 1967 which led to the release of their debut album “The Cowsills” that same year. The album featured hits such as “The Rain, the Park & Other Things” which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 and “We Can Fly” which made it to number nine on the chart in 1968.

The success of their first album led to more success for the group with multiple studio albums being released over the next few years. In 1969 they released their third album “II X II” which featured their hit single “Hair” which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that same year.
In 1971 they released their fifth album “The Cowsills In Concert” which was recorded live at Carnegie Hall in New York City that same year. They went on tour supporting acts such as Three Dog Night before disbanding in 1972 after releasing one final album titled “Global” that same year.
John continued making music after The Cowsills disbanded releasing solo albums such as his self-titled debut in 1976 and “One Of A Kind” in 1979 as well as collaborating with other artists throughout his career including Bob Dylan, Rick Springfield, and Don Henley among others.
