James Otto was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1973. He grew up in a family of musicians; his father was a blues musician and his mother sang gospel music. At the age of 12, he began playing guitar and singing in church. After high school, he moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music.
In 2003, Otto signed with Mercury Records Nashville and released his debut album Days of Our Lives that same year.
