Harry Markopolos is an American financial fraud investigator and whistleblower who rose to fame in 2009 when he exposed the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. He was born on October 22, 1956 in Meadville, Pennsylvania and attended Allegheny College for two years before transferring to Mansfield University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with a degree in accounting in 1979.
After college, Harry worked as a securities analyst for an investment firm before becoming an independent financial fraud investigator in 2002. In 2000, he began investigating the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme and eventually discovered that it had been operating since at least the mid-1990s.
He attempted to alert the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about his findings but was ignored. In 2008, Harry published a book titled “No One Would Listen: A True Financial Thriller” which detailed his investigation into the Madoff fraud case.
In 2009, after Madoff confessed to running a $65 billion Ponzi scheme, Harry received recognition for his work as a whistleblower and was awarded $104 million by the SEC for his role in exposing the fraud case.
