After retiring from acting at age 60, he spent much of his time writing screenplays for television shows such as The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Lloyd was married twice; first to Mildred Davis whom he met while making The Freshman in 1925 until her death in 1969; they had two children together named Gloria Jean (born 1926) and Harold Jr.(born 1928). He later married actress Peggy Rea with whom he adopted two children; Suzanne (born 1954) and Stephen (born 1956).
Lloyd died on March 8th 1971 at age 77 due to cancer complications at St John’s Hospital Santa Monica California after suffering a stroke earlier that year. He is remembered today for being one of Hollywood’s greatest comedians whose influence can still be seen today through modern day comedy filmmakers like Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell who have cited him as an inspiration for their work.
