Gloria was born on October 28th, 1942 in Alexandria, Indiana to parents Lola Mae Johnson and John Varner Johnson Jr. Her father was a pastor at First Baptist Church in Alexandria while her mother worked as a school teacher for many years before becoming a homemaker when their children were young.
Growing up she attended Alexandria High School where she developed an interest in music playing piano at church services from a young age.
